Great video Mark, the true test will be high res VR, from what I've been hearing, the 5090 starts to pull away from the 4090 the higher the resolution, so using the Crystal (Light) at it's higher resolution settings should be interesting. At $3200 to $4100 Canadian, I'm passing on this gen of GPU and hanging onto my 4090. Personally, for those kind of prices, I would want twice the performance of my 4090, anything less is just not worth it.

I like the VR experience using a Pico 4/ 4090 in MSFS2020, not moved on to MSFS2024 yet just waiting to see what kind of hardware requirements I would be looking at when 2024 reaches a reasonable level of maturity. Looking forward to your VR review. Excellent test and viewpoints!

Wow! I'm very thankful I wasn't able to get a 5090 at launch. I'll be passing on this gen, at least until the Super/TI's show some serious improvements. In DLSS Q/4k Ultra the 5090 had less performance and more power draw? That's ridiculous! 😳

If you are not flying in VR i really don't see any reason to go from 4090 to a 5090. If you only change GPU once every 4 to 6 years well go for the 5090 otherwise only VR people will gain any profit here with a 5090. Looking forward to that review Mark. Thanks for you time ;-)

Great vid Mark, I reckon the 5090 will stretch its legs better with higher resolutions (especially VR headsets) maybe in part due to the extra Vram. Take care.

What I don't understand is why people are experiencing issues with ghosting and smearing. I am running MSFS on a RTX 4080 paired with a 7800X3D in 4k and I'm not having any issues.
I'm using DLSS4 with DLAA mode (looking better than TAA) and only seeing sharp images with clear numbers in the glass cockpit. The driver version is 572.47.

For the extra 12/13fps in 4k I'd stick with the 4090. I get between 40 and 60fps with my 7900xt and I'm happy with that. Everything is cpu bound at a certain point.

I have a similar spec to yours intel 14900K + RTX 4090, I have a 5090 on preorder, god knows when that will come. The improvements look disappointing but any increase is good. Looking forward to your 5090 VR review.

Can you please do a vr comparison with dllss dlaa. Max settings to give the 5090 the edge, I hope to see at least 10 fps more

If You want to make a graphics card cry, have the FBW A380 (8k version) at Inibuilds Dubai with traffic and all settings maxed out. That's a benchmark

Well my upgrade is from a 3090. I run 4K and from your results I should be happy. My goal is 60fps in TAA at ultra and my system is close to yours but I have a AMD 9800 x3d. Thank you Mark for your testing.

Great stuff. I'm sure you are aware that having the gpu power/wattage monitoring enabled in msi afterburner will cause a noticeable frame time spike each time it gets the power usage from the gpu. Be interesting to see with that off, if the 0.1% and 1% lowers are improved and if we see a different kind of delta between 4090/5090 in that case.

Great video Mark, thank you. I have a 4080S system which I got in November last year. I think an upgrade to a 5090 for me would be substantial, but the price! Maybe I should wait for a 5080S? I am happy with the performance of my current system so I can afford to wait and see. Thank you again for your videos, they help a lot in understanding the options.

Many thanks for posting the video. I realise it would clutter things up, but I would suggest that showing what each individual core is doing would be much more informative, since the CPU% shown is the average of all cores and so of not much use.

1440 is the sweet spot. Most non-competitive gamers would be perfectly happy with a $599 9070 XT. I got mine for slightly more- around $750- Hellhound version. There should be a lawsuit for false advertising MSRP. That aside, for under $800 all in, it runs all games at 1440 just fine. Had some driver time outs on Forza 5 but I will keep testing. I have 30- days. Can't justify spending anymore. The 9070 XT also runs much cooler than the 5090 or 4090.

Thanks Mark your the best. You've always help me with your videos even though I have been using MFS from its first conception. Now, in my late seventies and disabled, my family have put together to buy me a top of the range 5090 system with a Ryzen 9 9950X cpu from Chillblast. My present nine year old system was updated with a 3090 a few year ago, and has an old cpu that just about does the job, but struggles badly with stuttering even on medium settings. At my age I expect this to be my last PC so I may as well go out with a bang. Thank you for all the hard work that you've put into your videos over the years, I will always be indeted to you....John (LIiverpool)

Would be an interesting test to see the difference between the two using VR.

Unless you are wanting a few more frames for use in VR I can't justify £2500 for a 5090, l will be keeping my 4090.

I combined my 4090 with a 5090 SLI, so get the best of both worlds. It's awesome. I'm sooo cool.

I just ordered a 4090 laptop. It’s really more like a 4070 Ti, but something you mentioned in the video was important: we’re now in the era of needing 16GB, and the 4090 is the only Nvidia laptop card that comes with it.

Just an FYI, all the runs had the frame limiter on, first one was at 100% monitor refresh rate and subsequent ones were at 50% monitor refresh rate. I'm pretty sure that's the reason why the later results, especially at 1440p were so close.

I don't see the point of having a graphic's card test, 4090 v 5090 when you are constantly just flying into the sunset or sunrise.
All the detail and colours are washed out for a start, you cant even see the shadows due to light bleed.
Midday or during a typical overcast day would be better to show of the differences in detail, number crunching is just that, numbers, what I would have liked to see is pixel detail, how does the environment look and feel in the countryside.

I'm currently waiting for my 5090 preorder, it's still a massive upgrade for my new Rig (9800X3D) as my previous rig was a 5800X3D with a 6800XT Nitro.

Will wait on the 6090 and stay with my 4090, my money is going on Force Feedback

So those that might be into something like vrchat or other vr games. In vrchat the 5090 can actually be maxed out and vrchat takes more performance then a flight simulator. A maxed 4090 everything is around 12-13 fps and 5090 is 45 fps on the maxed eye resolution scale 6100 x 5100 mxaa x4 but on mxaa turned off which looks almost as good it gets around 70 fps as 4090 gets around 25-30

excited for the VR comparison. Wondering whether its just more worth it to buy a 4090 used instead of a 5090 over my 3090

Using DLSS quality you essentially run 1440p upscaled to 4k so fps count 60 is same as your 1440p TAA test. Makes sense. The real test is high res VR. Reality is 1440p is CPU limited in 4090 5090 so to break tie, 4-8k is where you'll see it.

Nice video. You should try DLSS swapper and try again with the latest version, especially if you are planning a VR review. You will be 100% satisfied. Expect +20% performance.
I ran MSFS24 with a 5090 on the Apple Vision Pro at about 4000x4000 per eye and got about 60fps with reasonable mid/high settings. But DLSS 4 is essential to get this.

Mark, looking at your tests you aren't fully loading the 5090 in most of them (TAA Full Ultra 4K got close). I can fully max my 4090 with my 5.9GHz all core OC'd 14900KS at about 40%. I wonder if the results for the 5090 would be higher if it was driven harder. I have a 5090 pre-ordered but that could be months away. I think a big benefit will be in VR in the Varjo Aero.

Thanks Mark, I am upgrading to 5090 from 4080 so I do expect a significant bump although like you it's the VR I am interested in. I suspect the CPU bottleneck is holding the 5090 back in some of those tests.

I’ve saved a significant amount of dosh for a 5090, but I’m NOTpaying those prices so have decided to keep my 3090 w5900x and invest that money in a racing sim rig and hardware.

I like the fact that the 5090 is running 10 degrees COOLER than the 4090. That is substantial.

Hey Mark, thanks for the video. Excellent content as always. My disappointment lays more in the fact why the product MSFS2024 even exists. The new features could have been added as DLC to 2020 as well. Instead of paying more attention to optimizing the sim for performance they just want to sell.
We the end users, well most of them, fell for it just as most of them do with this new generation GPU. It never pays off to be on the front row with everything. Skip at least 1 generation of motherboard, CPU’s and GPU’s. It will give you way more satisfaction and bang for your buck. That being said, each to its own and if money is no objection then go for it but expect disappointment ;)

Great insight Mark. I think you just saved a lot of simmers a lot of money! I think you can use a coffee! I do wish you’d do one very simple and quick test while you still have the 5090 available. I like to use pop-out panels since I fly in 2D. (3D and my head don’t get along.) However, unlike in P3D and FSX, having a second window open cripples MSFS 2020/2024. The frame rates plummet! Would you please test if the 5090’s brute strength helps overcome this problem? I’d greatly appreciate it! Thank you sir. Will I see you at FSExpo this year?!

Thank you for conducting this test. However, I must express that there are already numerous tests of FS running on the pancake screen with RTX5090. Therefore, there seems to be no justification for upgrading from RTX4090. Please test the VR performance with the PIMAX Crystal, if feasible, as I have heard that the Crystal does not operate on RTX5090.

Your 5090 results are about 5% higher than my AMD 9070 XT OC results, same locations/settings.

Great you got one but I always feel so sorry for those that did get one. Yes I know almost all oddly got it for MSRP haha... but.. NV ripped every one off and just wow. How ODD APPLE will make sure you pay the same price but NV asking others to maybe not rise the price so high.. oddly won't. Sad

I was looking to upgrade my 3070 but I only game at 1080p and after I found a hack for FSR frame generation on a NVIDIA card, I don't think I need to upgrade now. Getting a solid 60fps on high settings with RT on. This gen is crazy money for not that much more than last gen. Might skip a gen and see how it goes.

If MSRP was a real thing i'd be tempted.

Consistent frametime is all that really matters - highest FPS in flight sims is just a myth - it will make no dissernable difference, unlike a FPS like CSGO for twitch reactions etc etc. VSync on, 60hz, at 80% of your GPU power. That........................ is the best you're gonna get with 2020, 2024 and DCS and all you will ever need with a flight sim. You're welcome.

The 5090 is a great card but you can't expect more than a 25% increase in performance over the 4090. Which is impressive. In other games you get worst results, not bad for MFS24.

I can appreciate technological advances for a fair price, the RTX5090 to date is $5,299.99 on Amazon. That's more than double the cost of an RTX4090 less than a year ago. What a rip. I wonder what the price tag will be an 3 to 5 years? In any case, it's not worth it.... period.

That 5090 is also a whole lot cooler than the 4090! That's a big deal.

That tightening between 5090 and 4090 at 1440p is because you are cpu bottlenecked at that point. You will need a 9800x3d for the 5090 to truly stretch its legs and comparing the 40 and 50 series with the cpu you have at anything less than 4k is not a good test

Please try a test with the new AMD 9070 and 9070XT cards. They seem to be the only higher end cards that are somewhat affordable and available.

I will keep to my RTX 3090 for now, as I do not accept these exorbitant prices for relatively small performance improvement (and besides, just like many Europeans I happily boycott all that is made in America at the moment). Maybe with a 6090 we'll be able to duplicate that awesome MSFS24 trailer we watched a year ago.
Or was that trailer fake? Because no one seems to be able to make FS24 look anything like that trailer.

Have you look at the Asus software GPU Tweak 3 to check the amperage by pin?
